The best lifting belts for 2026

A lifting belt gives the abdomen something to brace against. Two published figures describe it and both are in millimetres. Width at the back is commonly 100 mm, and that figure comes from powerlifting federation rules rather than from anatomy — it is the maximum permitted in competition, which is why it became the standard. Thickness is 6.5 mm, 10 mm or 13 mm on leather belts, and it is the figure that decides how much the belt gives. A 13 mm belt is extremely stiff, takes months to break in and is a squat-and-deadlift tool; a 6.5 mm belt is comfortable immediately and does less. The cut is the next fork: a uniform belt is the same width all the way round, which is what powerlifting uses; a tapered belt is narrow at the front and wide at the back, which is more comfortable for anything involving bending and is what most gym-goers prefer. Neither is a compromise of the other. The material — full-grain leather, suede-lined leather, or nylon with a velcro closure — changes both the stiffness and the life. Nylon belts are instantly comfortable, adjust infinitely and are the ones that work loose under a heavy pull. The buckle decides how fast the belt goes on and off: a single prong is simple and adjusts in fixed holes, a double prong is stronger and slower, and a lever is fastest of all and set to one waist size until it is unbolted and moved. And the sizing: belts are sized by waist measurement at the navel, not by trouser size, and every serious maker says so. We compare thickness, width, closure, material and size range.
